Norm Gardner is the January Owner of the Month

Our Owner of the Month award winner for January is Norm Gardner part owner of Vindex and Showusyourmotor.  We chatted to Norm about his involvement in racing

Norm bought his first share in a racehorse when he was in his early 20’s. The horse was bought from SAROA member and at the time Alice Springs bookmaker Terry Lillis and the horse was trained by Gary Searle. Norm caught the racing bug then and has been involved in ownership ever since.

He said his best were

Finke (Turffontein – Blooming Marvellous) who won eight races as a three-year-old in the Territory culminating in a Third in the Darwin Cup.

Getting Lucky (Danzig Connection – Crafty Luck) who won 12 races in the Territory and one at Caulfield

As well as Letmeentertainyou (Catbird – News Academy) who won once in Darwin and five times in Adelaide.

The two horses for which Norm is our January winner represent two different aspects of race ownership.

Vindex (Fastnet Rock – Mithila) is a 7-year-old who was picked up as a tried horse by Norm’s partner – trainer Kristi Evans. At the time he got to Kristi he had raced 23 times for a lowly maiden win at Benalla. Since then while only winning twice, he has picked up a second, 7 thirds and 2 fourths and his total prizemoney sits at just over $92,000.

Vindex is well bred with his dam Mithila being by Encosta Da Lago, she was unraced but has produced Hierarchal (by High Chaparral) winner of almost $190,000 and Madam Legend (by I Am Invincible) winner of over $185,000 to date.

The granddam Twyla (by Danehill) produced the stakes winner Murjana (by Giants Causeway); as well as Celebria (by Peintre Celebre) dam of three stakes winners, most notably Gathering (by Tale Of The Cat) a Group 1 winner in Perth; and River Song (by Fusiachi Pegasus) dam of the stakes winner Niagara (by Encosta Da Lago) now a successful sire in New Zealand.

The third dam is the Nijinsky mare Dancing Show who left 2 stakes winners – both hugely successful sires in Hurricane Sky (by Star Watch) and Umatilla (by Miswaki).

Showusyourmotor (Zebedee – Glorious Night) was bred by Cornerstone Stud and looks to be an above average filly with one win from four starts. The dam Glorious Night is by Al Maher has only produced one to race so far.

The grand dam is Azardi (by Desert Prince) sire of the Villiers Stakes winner All Legal (also by Al Maher) winner of 6 races and nearly $600,000 with nothing else of note.

The third dam San Century (by Centaine) also left three stakes winners most notably Glorious Days by Hussonet a seven-time winner in Hong Kong including the Hong Kong Mile.

SAROA wishes Norm and Kristi all the best for their future success.
