Brenton with So Bene Owner of the Month for March is Brenton Scott for So Bene and New Roman. He talks to the guys on The Punter’s Club . Brenton told us about the horses and racing: Please thank those who put forward my name to win this award. As you aware owners on the whole contribute a great deal to the industry. While the high times are great, much of the time it’s a grind with little reward and many disappointments. As you may be aware I bred both of these horses. So Bene was foaled down at Mill Park and is out of Molto Bene, a mare which gave me some success and enjoyment during her racing career. Interestingly I won this award once before when she won the Group 3 SA Sires Produce Stakes. New Roman was bred and raised at Rosden Park in Wellington and is a great little horse. He had some serious complications from his gelding operation which is the reason for his abbreviated career. Andrew Clarken has done a great job bringing him back to form. So Bene is by Hinchinbrook out if Molto Bene (by Royal Academy) and has won once from four starts with the Stokes stable. Her dam Molto Bene won two Stakes races including, as Brenton notes, the Group 3 SA Sires Produce Stakes. In total she won 4 races and over $200,000. She has so far produced one other winner but as a young mare who has been served by well performed sires, the best is hopefully yet to come. The grand dam the well named Benevolent (by Generous) has an outstanding record in the breeding barn with 3 black type winners, the others being Classic Wei Wei (by Shamus Award) winner of four so far including the listed Port Adelaide Guineas. The star of the three is the multiple Group winner Mourinho (by Oratorio) winner of 11 races and $1.2 million with the Group 1 Underwood Stakes the highlight as well as 3 Group 2’s, 2 Group 3’s and a Listed race. New Roman’s March win was the second for the gelding by Written Tycoon out of The Bay Rod (by Nadeem). His dam won just the one race from 9 starts and has left another winner in Rodney (by Bel Esprit), winner of three. The grand dam is Roddick (by Last Tycoon) has left several good ones including The Black Rod (by Black Hawk) winner of 2 and over $80,000; Cairngorm (by Desert Sun); Island Beach (by Reann) and Quiddick (by Equiano) all handy horses. Brenton also had wins recently with Divenire (by Squamosa) and Magna Bella (by Magnus). As Brenton notes there are many highs and lows in racing but Brenton is going through a nice patch at present and SAROA wish him well.
